Sora no Tayori / A Letter From the Sky
Connecting Skies Art Project
Sora no Tayori is a participatory installation project that gathers the shared “sky” we all experience from the perspectives of different places, and reimagines them as one collective space.
Participants draw the sky as they experience it through their surroundings, memories, and personal senses, and send it as a letter from their place in the world. The skies that gather do not remain as individual works.
Within the exhibition space, they cross boundaries, flow into one another, and gradually transform into a single, continuous space.
This project values not only the act of viewing the artwork, but also the experience of being present within the space itself.
We hope that, upon stepping into this space, visitors may rediscover small sensations they have perhaps forgotten:
“When was the last time I looked up at the sky?”
“I had forgotten that there was a sky above me, too.”
By stepping just a little away from smartphones and the rhythms of everyday life, we hope to create a quiet space where the sky seen by someone far away can gently connect with each person’s own senses.
The sky stretches above us all, beyond nationality, culture, age, and social position.
Yet in today’s world, surrounded by busy lives and an overwhelming amount of information, it feels as though we are gradually losing the time to look up at the sky and to turn our attention inward, toward our own senses.
Through the shared presence of the sky, this project seeks to create a quiet space for reflecting on the connections between people, between different places, and between each of us and ourselves.
The project was also inspired by the experience of the organizer’s mother, who continued to draw the sky while living through illness. Through the act of drawing, she gradually began to reconnect with her emotions and sense of self.
Watching this process revealed the quiet power that creative expression can hold.
While rooted in this deeply personal experience, the project seeks to move beyond an individual story and grow into a space where the senses, memories, and experiences of people from around the world can meet and overlap.
