Nishida Museum of Art

The Nishida Museum of Art was founded in September 1993, based primarily on a collection of artworks personally acquired overseas by Yasumasa Nishida of Fuji Chemical Industries.

​

One of the museum’s distinctive features is its extensive collection of ceramics and sculptures from the ancient civilizations of the Orient, along the Silk Road and through to China. The collection, which now comprises more than 600 works, is considered rare among museums of its kind in Japan.

The museum also houses approximately 80 icons, sacred Christian paintings created from the 17th century through the early 20th century, making it one of the largest collections of its kind in Japan. In addition, the museum holds and exhibits numerous works by Josaku Maeda, a native of Nyuzen, Toyama, who is known as a contemporary “mandala painter.” Together, these collections offer visitors an opportunity to encounter the worlds of Eastern and Western spirituality and prayer.

The museum is also known for its collection of Central European paintings. Its collections of works by Hungarian artists such as C. Pál Molnár and Tamás Galambos offer a rare opportunity in Japan to experience Central European art, which remains relatively unfamiliar to many Japanese audiences.

This diverse collection, spanning from ancient civilizations to contemporary art, the museum seeks to explore the enduring relationship between nature, prayer, and art. This philosophy, which guides the museum’s activities, has attracted attention not only in Japan but also among scholars and cultural figures overseas.
